FAQs — Mike's Custom Ceremonies | Southern California Wedding Officiant

Question 1

How far in advance should we book?

Accepted Answer

Most couples book 3–6 months in advance, especially for popular dates — Saturdays from May through October fill up fast. That said, I can sometimes accommodate last-minute requests depending on availability. The moment you've set your date, reach out and I'll let you know if I'm free.

Question 2

Where can I read reviews for Mike's Custom Ceremonies?

Accepted Answer

My reviews are listed under So Cal DJ Pros — that's the parent company Mike's Custom Ceremonies operates under. You can find them on Google (https://share.google/9zKKD6XYoGFJvlaR6), WeddingWire (https://www.weddingwire.com/biz/so-cal-dj-pros/ed0b9fda1f7979c5.html), and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/p/Mikes-Custom-Ceremonies-61555793684354/). Same Mike, same ceremonies — just a different name on the listing.

Question 3

Are you bilingual?

Accepted Answer

I'm not — but before you close this window and start searching again, hear me out. If we've talked on the phone or Zoom and you're feeling the vibe, don't let that stop you. There are absolutely ways to make it work. I've done it many times and it's been beautiful every single time. We can bring in a close friend or family member to handle partial translation of specific segments — an opening prayer, a meaningful reading, a cultural moment — not the entire ceremony (that would be one very long day), but the parts that matter most to you. I'm grateful you'd even consider me, and I'm committed to making sure your ceremony feels like yours, in every language that matters to your family.

Question 4

Will you walk us through getting our marriage license?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — every step of the way. I'll tell you exactly which documents to bring, which County Clerk's office to visit, what to expect when you get there, and how to fill everything out correctly. It can feel daunting at first, but it's more straightforward than it looks, and you won't be navigating it alone.

Question 5

How many times do we meet?

Accepted Answer

Three times — and each one has a purpose. Our first meeting is all about getting acquainted, reviewing the contract together, and getting you set up with a homework worksheet so I can start learning your story. The second meeting is where the magic starts — we do the cold read of your ceremony, make real-time edits, and I walk you through exactly how to obtain your marriage license. The third meeting happens a few weeks after your wedding day, where we recap everything, celebrate how it all went, and make sure your marriage certificate is on its way to you (or already in your hands). Three meetings, zero guesswork.

Question 6

What's the first step to working with you?

Accepted Answer

Simple — fill out my availability form or send me a message. We'll schedule a free consultation to talk through your vision, answer your questions, and make sure we're a great fit. There's no obligation to book, and I promise it'll feel more like a conversation than an interview.

Question 7

Why hire a professional officiant instead of a friend or family member?

Accepted Answer

Your officiant is the first person your guests see and hear on your wedding day — they set the entire tone. A close friend may be great at parties, but public speaking in front of a crowd of people who love you is a different experience entirely. I've seen well-meaning relatives freeze up, forget their place, or turn the ceremony into an awkward toast. When you hire me, you get someone who has done this dozens of times, knows how to read a room, and will show up calm, prepared, and ready to make your ceremony unforgettable — without you having to hold their hand through it.

Question 8

Do you offer a free consultation?

Accepted Answer

Yes, always. Before you commit to anything, we'll connect — by phone, Zoom, or in person — to talk about your ceremony vision, your personalities, and what you want your guests to feel. It's the best way to make sure we're the right fit for each other.

Question 9

How long does a typical ceremony last?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the ceremony type. Elopements are typically around 20 minutes — intimate, intentional, and beautifully efficient. A full love story ceremony runs 25–45 minutes, depending on how much personalization, readings, or ritual elements you include. Vow renewals generally fall in the 25–35 minute range. Whatever the format, I'll make sure every minute counts.

Question 10

Can we write our own vows?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — and I love when couples do. I'll give you prompts, examples, and structure to help you find the right words without it feeling like homework. Whether you want to write completely from scratch or adapt something traditional, I'll make sure your vows feel authentic to who you are as a couple.

Question 11

Can we include readings or performances by family and friends?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Having loved ones participate makes the ceremony more meaningful. Whether it's a poem, a reading, a song, or a blessing, I'll help you incorporate those moments smoothly so the ceremony flows naturally and no one feels awkward about their timing.

Question 12

Can we read the ceremony script before the wedding?

Accepted Answer

Yes and no. I won't hand you a script to read on your own — but I will perform a live cold read with you on a Zoom call, where we can make real-time edits together. If additional changes are needed, we'll schedule a follow-up session to review them. Once we've gone through it, though, we don't revisit it again. That final version is what gets delivered on your wedding day — and the element of experiencing it fresh in the moment is something I protect intentionally.

Question 13

Can you incorporate cultural or religious traditions?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. I'm experienced with a wide range of traditions — unity candles, sand ceremonies, handfasting, the cord ceremony (lazo), the 13 coins (arras), ring warming, and more. If there's a tradition that's meaningful to your family, tell me about it and we'll find a way to weave it in beautifully.

Question 14

What if we want something completely non-traditional?

Accepted Answer

That's kind of my specialty. I don't do cookie-cutter ceremonies. If you want something funny, irreverent, deeply personal, or completely outside the box, I'm here for it. Tell me your vision and I'll build something around it.

Question 15

How early do you arrive on the wedding day?

Accepted Answer

I arrive 1 to 1.5 hours before the ceremony — not just to be early, but to be useful. I'll run audio checks, coordinate with your DJ or musician, connect with your photographer and videographer, and of course check in with you and your partner. If you're feeling nervous and need a moment to breathe, talk it through, or say a prayer together — I'm there for that too. You won't be managing the details alone on your wedding day.

Question 16

Do you attend the rehearsal?

Accepted Answer

For most ceremonies, I don't need to be at the rehearsal — I arrive early on the wedding day and guide everyone through it in real time. For more complex ceremonies with many participants, unity rituals, or no wedding coordinator, I'm happy to attend for an additional fee. We'll figure out together whether it makes sense for your day.

Question 17

What if there's bad weather and we're planning an outdoor ceremony?

Accepted Answer

I come prepared for anything. We'll discuss backup plans during our meetings so nothing catches us off guard. If weather forces a last-minute change, I adapt seamlessly — the ceremony will be beautiful wherever it happens.

Question 18

Can our pet be part of the ceremony?

Accepted Answer

Yes! If your dog (or cat, or whoever) is part of your family, they're welcome. I've officiated ceremonies with ring-bearing dogs and pets standing right alongside the couple. Just make sure your venue allows it and you have someone to wrangle them when needed.

Question 19

Do you stay for the reception?

Accepted Answer

I usually stay through cocktail hour to wrap things up and say goodbye, then leave you to celebrate with your guests. If you'd like me to stay longer, I'm happy to — just let me know in advance. Budgets are tight when planning a wedding and you shouldn't feel obligated to feed your officiant.

Question 20

Do we need to provide our own marriage license?

Accepted Answer

Yes — California requires couples to obtain a marriage license from the County Clerk's office before the ceremony. I'll walk you through exactly what you need, where to go, and how to fill everything out correctly. After the ceremony, I handle filing the signed certificate so you don't have to think about it.

Question 21

Do we need witnesses?

Accepted Answer

California requires at least one witness (18 or older) to sign your marriage license. Most couples have two — a parent, best friend, or member of the wedding party. If you need a witness, I can help arrange that too.

Question 22

How long does it take to receive our official marriage certificate?

Accepted Answer

After I file your signed certificate with the County Clerk (typically within 3–5 business days after the ceremony), the county processes it and mails it to you. This usually takes 2–3 weeks depending on the county.

Question 23

Are you legally authorized to perform weddings in California?

Accepted Answer

Yes. I'm an ordained, registered minister authorized to perform weddings throughout California. I handle all the legal paperwork, including signing and filing your marriage certificate with the county after the ceremony.

Question 24

Can you perform a ceremony if we already legally got married?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Many couples do a small legal ceremony at the courthouse, then have a larger celebration later. I'm happy to create a beautiful ceremony that honors your marriage even if the paperwork is already done.

Question 25

Do you officiate LGBTQ+ weddings?

Accepted Answer

Emphatically, yes. Love is love — full stop. I've been officiating same-sex ceremonies for years and I never default to gendered language unless that's what you want. We'll work together to choose words that feel authentic to your relationship and your story.

Question 26

Can I really get married anywhere?

Accepted Answer

Technically, yes — and that's one of the things I love most about this work. Beaches, forests, mountain tops, city rooftops, vineyards, backyards, parks, historic landmarks — if it means something to you, it's a valid venue. That said, many public spaces require a permit to hold a ceremony, so it's worth checking with the city, county, or land management agency ahead of time. I'm happy to help you think through the logistics for your chosen location.

Question 27

Where do you serve?

Accepted Answer

I'm based in Southern California and serve Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Riverside, and San Diego counties. I travel to your venue — whether that's a beach, a vineyard, a backyard, or a ballroom.

Question 28

Can I hire you for ceremonies outside of Southern California?

Accepted Answer

Yes! I travel for the right couple. Ceremonies outside my standard service area require a custom quote to cover travel. Reach out and let's talk through the details.

Question 29

How do payments work?

Accepted Answer

I keep it simple. I accept cash — paid in full, in advance, exact amount or with gratuity — and Zelle. That's it. No cards, no apps, no invoices. We'll confirm the total during your consultation so there are no surprises on either end.

Question 30

Is gratuity expected?

Accepted Answer

Not at all. A tip is never expected and I will never hint at one. If you feel moved to show appreciation, it is genuinely and deeply valued — but please know it is entirely optional. Showing up and doing right by you on your wedding day is the job, and that's already the reward.
